The breed of sheep around here is very old, got isolated at the time of the settlement, around the year 874. So these furry creatures have remained the same ever since. The wool has two different types of fibers, þel (pronounced thel, with the “th”sound as in thorough), which is the warm, soft, isolating stuff closest to the body and tog, the long water repellent fibers on the surface. So the wool has unique qualities being warm, soft, very light and water repellent at the same time. How Nammi came about The movement of colour is what inspired Ragga Eiríksdóttir to develop Nammi, the hand dyed Icelandic wool offered by Knitting Iceland. “I felt a need to do something funky to the Icelandic lace/fingering weight wool, known to many as Einband or Loðband. While many lovely colours are available from the Icelandic wool producer Ístex, I missed the uneven feel you get from hand dyeing yarn that produces such a nice movement in garments when knitted up.” Ragga started experimenting in the summer of 2009, using pots and jars in her own kitchen, afterwards hanging the hanks out to dry on her back porch, much to the neighbourhoods joy. “My neighbours felt like they were members of the cast in a colourful Bollywood movie. They were probably on the verge of song and dance the whole summer.”
