About us
Our philosophy
Iceland has a rich knitting tradition and today knitting is still an intrinsic part of the Icelandic culture. When it comes to knitting, it doesn´t matter whom you speak to, he or she will always have something interesting to tell you about knitting. Chances are that the person is a knitter him- or herself since knitting is intensely popular among the general public.
Our company
Knitting Iceland is owned and operated by Ragga Eiríksdóttir a native Icelandic knitter with passion to bringing knitters from all over the world closer to the unique Icelandic knitting atmosphere. We publish knitting-related material, such as books and tutorial DVDs, we teach knitting with passion and organize knitting tours to Iceland. The knitting tours were first offered in the summer of 2010 when we brought groups of wonderful knitters from all over the world to Iceland to experience the rich culture first hand.
We are located on Reykjavík’s main shopping street Laugavegur 25, 101 Reykjavík, 3rd floor. On Thursday afternoons between 2 and 6 our doors are open to knitters that want to meet us, sit and knit for a while or just pet our yarn. Welcome!
The team
Ragnheiður Eiríksdóttir (Ragga) is the nurse who couldn’t stop knitting. She worked for over a decade in sales and marketing in the pharma business and alongside as a sexuality educator, author and lecturer. Ragga has published a colourful knitting book, Prjóniprjón, and the first instructional knitting DVD in Icelandic. She developed her own yarn label, Nammi, meaning candy, hand dyed in vibrant colours. Ragga firmly beliefs that knowledge is the key to knitting-freedom, that’s why she is so dedicated to teaching all the little tricks and techniques in knitting. She now works as a knitting instructor, designer, author and the general manager of Knitting Iceland. Check out Ragga’s tumblr site.
Our partners:
The Handknitting Association of Iceland was founded in November 1977. A few women, who had used knitting to supplement their families´ income, decided to join forces and established an organization in order to facilitate more extensive marketing of their knitted products. The initial members´ meeting was held in Reykjavík and was attended by close to 1.000. Soon after the Association was established, a store was opened to sell members´ hand knitted woolen goods. The store is a flourishing business in its own right and offers the largest selection of Icelandic yarns from Ístex. Thus, our online store is always well provided!
LT Travel is a small but experienced travel agency located in New York state USA and run by the Icelandic Lína who has lived over there for quite some time. Lína is the perfect partner because she always does her very best to find the best rates and the most convenient routes for our traveling knitters. www.ltttravel.com
