The tour
Join Knitting Iceland and Annie Modesitt for a tour organized around the two major events of the Reykjavík summer, the Reykjavík Marathon and the Culture night.
Let us introduce you to the best that the Northernmost capital in the world has to offer. During August the streets are vibrant with culture and colors. Knitters lurk on every corner and inspiration is ever present.
In addition to experiencing the city at it’s best we will take you out of town on a fiberlicious day tour where you will meet people working with the Icelandic craft tradition in spinning, plant dyeing, knitting, felting and much, much more. You’ll be amazed by the unique pieces and the great selection of items. On the tour we will also meet botanist Guðrún Bjarnadóttir and learn from a true visionary and expert about plant dyeing with Icelandic herbs. A dip into the geothermal pool in Borgarnes will be a lovely end to the day.
Those of you who run will surely be eager to participate in the famous Reykjavík Marathon (3K, 10K, 21.1K and 42.2K). Those who would rather walk can choose to participate in the 3K walk while knitting! And those who would rather just knit will of course be able to do so. The day of the Marathon is also the day of the Reykjavík Culture night – the city turns into a super vibrant culture scene with music, art and events on every corner. The celebration culminates at midnight with a spectacular show of fireworks over the Reykjavík sky.
The guest tutor
A native of Ohio, Annie taught herself to knit at age 25 before a move from NYC to Texas. The Texas tenure didn’t last, but knitting did, and upon her return to the NY area Annie began knitting for other designers and designing for major knitting magazines. Her work has appeared in Interweave Knits, Vogue Knitting, Knitters Magazine, Cast On, Family Circle Easy Knitting, McCalls Needlework and several family oriented magazines.
Author of Confessions of a Knitting Heretic, Knitting Millinery, Twist & Loop, Men Who Knit And The Dogs Who Love Them, Romantic Hand Knits and editor of 1000 Fabulous Knit Hats and the collection of fiber essays, Cheaper Than Therapy, Annie has contributed to many knitting books including Knit Knit, Stich N’ Bitch, Scarf Style, Wrap Style, The Vogue Knitting Book, Weekend Knitting and Holiday Handknits. Annie is also the inventor of the astoundingly clever Flip Knit, a low tech, portable alternative to knitting videos.
Annie knits using the Combination Method and believes that there truly is no wrong way to knit. She lives in St Paul, MN with her husband, kids and assorted pets and bikes whenever possible.
