Knit to the music

Reykjavík, Iceland October 11.-17. 2011
So you are a knitter who loves music? Well, here is the ultimate knitting tour crafted around your interests. Knit to the music is our first ever tour combining quality knitting classes with a world class music festival, Iceland Airwaves. The local gone global festival has been described by the Rolling Stone as “THE HIPPEST LONG WEEKEND ON THE ANNUAL MUSIC-FESTIVAL CALENDAR”.
Knitting Iceland is super happy to present Franklin Habit as a guest tutor on this tour. Frank is known for his edgy, satirical and above all, inspiring blog, his witty knitting cartoons and for his knitting classes that range from working with antique patterns to classes on how to photograph your knitterly accomplishments.
The classes on the tour include a photography session with Franklin Habit, his class on lace edging, Knitting Iceland’s own Ragga’s class on Lopapeysa knitting (that’s Icelandic for the classic patterned yoke), and a knit graffiti workshop.
Let us take you around the Northernmost capital of the world to some of our favorite restaurants, the geothermal outdoor pools, the LYS’s and out of the city to see unforgettable natural phenomena such as Geysir (the original one), Þingvellir where the American and European tectonic plates meet and the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall. The Icelandic nature continues to offer unique inspiration to artists, designers and knitters from all over the world.
We will be based down town Reykjavík at a cool and comfortable guest house, Reykjavík Backpackers, where you’ll get to stay on the top guest floor, in double bedded rooms with a great view of the city. Knitting Iceland’s office is just on the other side of the vibrant main shopping street of Reykjavík. For those wanting a little more peace and quiet we offer Guest house Sunna, a lovely place just a few steps from the main shopping street. Sunna is a little bit more expensive (add 176 USD for a double room and 352 USD for a single room).
The clubs and bars of Reykjavík all turn into the venue for the Iceland Airwaves festival during these five days in October, however the off-venue program has become more and more impressive each year. You might experience exciting numbers at hair saloons, cafés, clothing stores… in fact wherever you are down town.
To give you an idea, here are just a few of the bands that have performed in the past: The Shins, Florence and the Machine, Flaming Lips, Bloc Party, Hurts, Fatboy Slim, Sigur Rós, FM Belfast, Múm and Gus Gus. Check out the full list from 2010.
